HG Trackside specializes in driver development on various levels. From taking your own car to a track day for private coaching all the way to developing a driver to reach the ultimate goal of pro-level racing.

January 26-27, HG Trackside Private Coach, Oscar Jackson Jr., spent the weekend coaching Adam, who brought out his 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3 and Matt who brought his BMW M4 to Buttonwillow Raceway in Buttonwillow, CA.

Coaching at a track day like this involves much more than just going fast. To get there, it helps to have a basic understanding of the vehicle and how it reacts. But of course, through this first step of private coaching, learning the finer aspects of car control and vehicle dynamics comes with seat time.

This involves going out for as many sessions as possible and listening to the valuable coaching tips of your private coach while in and out of the car. Your private coach will alternate between riding right seat and potentially demonstrating from the driver’s seat how best to hit your marks and find the correct line around the track. Lead follow can also be a valuable on-track coaching tool. This is where one car leads the other around the track to show line and braking points. It is important, though, to not become transfixed on the cars bumper in front of you and to look far ahead.

When out of the car, Oscar showed his clients data from the sessions. The data shows a number of things such as lap times, throttle and brake applications, steering angle and wheel slip. This is an extremely important and helpful part of private coaching as it can show in fine detail how your driving style/habits might be helping or hurting in getting the best lap times. Data is shown in the private garage where the coach and clients can regroup and stay out of the elements. It’s also a perfect spot to work on a vehicle if needed.

This first step in learning about your vehicle and your abilities on track is the perfect way to get your feet wet in the racing world. There’s no pressure of needing to place on the podium and with your own private coach you get real-time feedback that is so valuable.

HG Trackside has limited space left available for additional drivers looking to start improving their skills on track. Reach out to team HG for more information.
